What we can do when we find an unknown file type is to identify what exactly the file type is, and then we’ll be able to find out the applications that can open it. But, instead of finding out the information on different places, you can instantly identify an unknown file type and get the link of the programs that can open it in one place.

FileSuffix is an online directory containing specific information about file types. Type a file extension in the search box and hit the “search” button. The information you’ll get for the file type is a short definition of it and the name of the program that you can use to open and convert it. Additionally, there is a link to Wikipedia provided in case you aren’t satisfied with the short description of the file type. FileSuffix is a free online service and doesn’t require registration.
