Password Protect Applications

1 Comment | Posted in Protection

The idea is basically the same as Game Protector and LockAnExe: to password protect applications. Preventing access to applications is needed if you have certain applications that are sensitive to be used by other users like registry or file cleaner. By password protecting applications, a user must enter the right password to be able to run the protected application.

Using application password protection software like Game Protector, LockAnExe and now Empathy, applications can be locked and unlocked easily. With Empathy, you simply select the application, specify the password used to protect the application and click the “Protect” button. The locked application will be always protected even if you move it to another location or another computer.

In case something terrible happens to your application after applying the password protection, you can create a backup before the process starts.

After creating backup and applying the protection, you can test it out if the protection does work as intended. If you, someday, decide to unlock the application, you can simply click the “Unprotect” button to turn off the password protection.

Empathy is a portable application designed to work under Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me. It is free, but before you send a postcard to the maker, Michal Strehovsky, you won’t be able to use all of the functions provided.

Lock Any Application With Freeware LockAnExe

2 Comments | Posted in Protection

Need to lock an application? If you do, then LockAnExe offers a free, simple way to lock application so that no one can run it until it gets unlocked with the program.

How to lock application with LockAnExe

  1. Browse and select the application by clicking “Open File” button.
  2. Select “Lock File” and click “Do it”. The original icon of the locked application will be replaced by a white box icon, signaling that it has been locked.

You can lock more than one application. However, the developer doesn’t specify the number limit of the applications that can be locked. I only tried to lock two applications, CCleaner and Auslogics Registry Defrag, and it runs well. Both cannot be run until I unlocked it.

A feature that I want it to be added is the ability to set a master password for the program so no other user can unlock the programs I have locked. However, since there is no message pops out saying something like “this application has been locked with LockAnExe“, I think no one would know that the application is being locked with LockAnExe and, thus, wouldn’t search for the program within the computer to unlock the locked applications without our permissions.

Another limitation from the program is that you have to remember all the applications you have locked with it. Otherwise, you won’t be able to unlock. You need to browse and select the application again, and click the “Unlock File” to unlock each of the locked applications.
