Lock Any Application With Freeware LockAnExe

2 Comments | Posted in Protection

Need to lock an application? If you do, then LockAnExe offers a free, simple way to lock application so that no one can run it until it gets unlocked with the program.

How to lock application with LockAnExe

  1. Browse and select the application by clicking “Open File” button.
  2. Select “Lock File” and click “Do it”. The original icon of the locked application will be replaced by a white box icon, signaling that it has been locked.

You can lock more than one application. However, the developer doesn’t specify the number limit of the applications that can be locked. I only tried to lock two applications, CCleaner and Auslogics Registry Defrag, and it runs well. Both cannot be run until I unlocked it.

A feature that I want it to be added is the ability to set a master password for the program so no other user can unlock the programs I have locked. However, since there is no message pops out saying something like “this application has been locked with LockAnExe“, I think no one would know that the application is being locked with LockAnExe and, thus, wouldn’t search for the program within the computer to unlock the locked applications without our permissions.

Another limitation from the program is that you have to remember all the applications you have locked with it. Otherwise, you won’t be able to unlock. You need to browse and select the application again, and click the “Unlock File” to unlock each of the locked applications.

Turn Off Windows Sounds Easier With SoundOff

If you want to turn off Windows sounds using the Sounds and Audio Devices applet that you can find within the Control Panel, you’ve got to go through a longer way to do it. I say longer because here I compare the standard way with a utility that does it much simpler, easier and faster. Using the standard way is fine if you intend to turn off Windows sounds permanently or to disable some of the Windows sounds you prefer to hear no more, but what if you want to disable the sounds temporarily during, let’s say, you watching a movie?

SoundOff disables the Windows sounds whenever you right click the icon on the tray and select the “Turn Sounds Off” option. Additionally, this one lets you to rename and delete the sound schemes you add and prevent other programs to automatically change your current Windows sound schemes.

Another way to turn off Windows sounds is to right-click the icon and select “Change Scheme” followed by clicking “No Sounds“. This means you can also change your Windows sound scheme easily without having to “explore” the Control Panel to search for the applet.

Delete Files Automatically With Auto Delete

Keeping your harddisk space clean from unused files is a constant challenge. You run several maintenance utilities to wipe out temporary files, broken registry keys, broken shortcuts and so on, periodically. It’s still easy, anyway. The real challenge is perhaps keeping the space clean from unused files that you create yourself. Then, Auto Delete could be the automatic deletion freeware you want to try.

The only function of Auto Delete is to delete files in a specified folder that are older than the specified days, weeks or months. You could run it manually, but the automatic way is simpler. Make sure that the option “Start delete on Windows startup” is checked and it will delete the files automatically every time you start Windows.

Unluckily, we can’t define custom age for the files to be deleted. The options are limited to the available ages, or time frames, within the application. Select if you want to automatically delete files that are older than 1 day, 2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year.

The subfolders can be included in the scanning and deletion process. A user can select if the status window should be displayed during the progress and if the files detected are moved to recycle bin.

Nothing is perfect, though. It’s easy to use. It does enable a novice user to delete files automatically without typing any code, but only one folder that can be selected to be processed with the program.

How to Play RMVB Video Files

What is RMVB file? How to play it? My friend says that it is a video file, but I can’t play it on my Windows Media Player. What program do I need to use to play it?

RMVB stands for RealMedia Variable Bitrate, a video format that many people prefer to publish their video files or download videos from internet since it has lower bitrate and the size is also smaller than other video formats, but the quality is still pretty well maintained.

There are two ways you can choose to play this file. The first option is using the RealPlayer, a free program from the Real site. But I don’t like using this one because it is plastered with ads. The second option is using Real Alternative. This one lets you to play RMVB files without having to install RealPlayer / RealOne Player. With the help of Real Alternative, you can play RMVB video on Windows Media Player. I myself usually watch Naruto in rmvb format on Windows Media Player with the help of Real Alternative.

Real Alternative supports the following video formats: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip. Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla, and Netscape are the browser supported by its browser plugin.
